FIRST EXPERIENCE OF HEALING PEOPLE WITH STUTTERING
After completing specialization courses at the Kharkov Institute for Advanced Medical Studies, I undertook the treatment of all patients who came for help enthusiastically and with great pleasure , regardless of age, diagnosis and prescription of the disease. I truly wanted to help and acquire such necessary personal experience, which is always not enough for a doctor in their early practice years.
Once, on one of the days of work, a woman with a little girl of five turned to me with a request to help cure the disease. I had no experience in treating stuttering, let alone young children,
but did not refuse.
I decided to conduct ordinary hypnotherapy sessions, since by that time I had not yet developed other treatment methods. I should note that in the Belgorod-Dniester psychiatric hospital I was allocated 0.25 rates of a psychotherapist, and my main job was to work as a psychiatrist in one of the departments.
After completing my main duties as a psychiatrist, I stayed in the hospital and conducted hypnotic sessions in the evening. Naturally, I did not work for a quarter of the rate of a psychotherapist, however for a whole rate. Practically, I did not refuse treatment to anyone and stayed late at work. For treatment, I could choose any office in the clinic.
There was no complete confidence in the positive outcome of the treatment, but there were enthusiasm and self-confidence inherent in young and strong people.
I laid the girl on the couch, she closed her eyes and in a monotonous voice I conducted verbal suggestions aimed at immersing the patient in a hypnotic state. The girl lay still, with her eyes closed and listened to what I was saying. Session duration was from 30-40 minutes. Unfortunately, the expected hypnotic state of the kind that I usually caused in adult patients, I could not call the girl, she just lay and listened to everything that I said. But, despite the lack of a hypnotic state, my patient began to recover, and after 20 sessions her speech recovered completely.
Her mother, of course, was very pleased with the results of the treatment. In the future, she once again sought my help with the second girl who seemed older by a year or two, but already with more serious mental disorders.
The second girl seemed something and she experienced fear and anxiety. Given the patient's young age, prescribing any potent drugs was dangerous due to possible side effects and I decided to conduct hypnotherapy sessions.
The treatment went according to the usual scheme, which I used in the treatment of her sister. To my moral and professional satisfaction, the result was excellent and the girl got rid of the mental disorder.
I have developed friendly relations with her family. Before the New Year, her husband volunteered to set up the antenna which was on a high mast. At that time, my wife was after a difficult operation and it was necessary to brighten up her life a little, but unfortunately the reception at the antenna was weak. Of course, help was provided to me, but in a peculiar way, the upper part of the antenna was removed and it was reported that tomorrow he would come and finish the work, but neither tomorrow nor the day after tomorrow was he there. I had to call and ask what happened and I got the answer from his wife: "He has a lot of work now!"
So that I had to do everything myself and it's good that in the New Year I managed to fix everything. In the future, I repeatedly had to deal with such a kind of human "gratitude." This is the share of the doctor - to do good and get what people can give. Some remember good, others immediately forget it. Nevertheless, the first positive experience of treating young patients inspired me to further work with patients with stuttering (or individuals who stammer).
